Diarrhrea in the Mini Horse
In the Miniature horse diarrhea should not be ignored for any length of time. Minis can begin to
dehydrate after a couple hours of diarrhea.
Etiology of diarrhea in the miniature horse include: stress or overexcitement; rapid changes in
diet; viral, bacterial or parasite infections; and even inflammatory or autoimmune conditions that
damage the intestinal wall.
Paramount in the care of a horse with diarrhea is trying to encourage water intake to minimize
dehydration. But if the cause of the diarrhea is not recognized and eliminated rapidly, seeking
veterinary care in a timely manner could be the only chance a horse has to survive.
